Greek thrashers Suicidal Angels have released a video for Beggar of Scorn, which comes from their recently released third album, Dead Again.

It’s probably a small scene in Greece, but it’s interesting to note that the directing credit goes to Bob Katsionis, the rhythm guitarist and keyboard player of Firewind.

Suicidal Angels are good old-school Euro thrash. From the little I’ve heard of them I’m liking them a lot. I might have to catch up on their discography at my local.

After much umming and ahhing, I decided to bite the bullet and get my arse to this show. Typically, the later you leave these things, the more you are rewarded, as they had put up special “packages” including a Megadeth CD/ticket bundle.
My main concern was the lineup of this festival.

It was a decision I had to weigh up. In the metal arena, 3 Inches of Blood, Gwar, Katatonia, and metal heavyweights Megadeth. And the others? Outsider, Leeches, Antagonist AD, We Came as Romans, Suicide Silence, Frenzal Rhomb, Parkway Drive, Dropkick Murphys and NOFX and a band called Shitripper. Um who? Yes exactly.

It turned out as soon as I landed in Auckland it was all going to be worth it. Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson was spotted getting out of the lift at my hotel. Ahhhh I am instantly trembling in my knee-high boots. The legends are here.

Turning up to the ASB showgrounds, I was in no rush. Gates opened around 12pm, but nothing worthwhile in the way of decent bands was happening until 2pm. Much time was killed at the merch stand (surprisingly there were a few good tour shirts marked at the affordable $40 price). I was struck by the unfamiliar assembling crowd. Younger punk and emo fans clearly outnumbered the older metal brigade considerably. Hardly any older metal shirts were to be seen. I had donned a vintage Katatonia shirt for the event which became an item of envy during each trip to the little girl’s room.

Interestingly, the venue was like a giant hall. Two stages were set up side by side. I thought this wasn’t a bad idea, while one band played, the other completed soundcheck and were right on schedule, no mucking about.

Canadians, 3 Inches of Blood finally appeared. Ah, the first of many bourbons were consumed. I was in awe of the vocalist’s pitch, and was transported back to the days when metal was fun. Ahh memories. NWOBHM… come back!!!

All too soon it was over, and the long wait until 4pm began when something good was about to happen.

I made it to the front row to wait for Katatonia, while my ears were assaulted by Suicide Silence and their mediocre deathcore screechings from the other stage. Hurry up, real musicians!

And that they did. I witnessed Per Eriksson himself (ex-Bloodbath) struggling through sound check. I didn’t mind, he smiled at me half a dozen times. The technical issues continued during their set, but they handled it like pros. I also affirmed that Jonas Renske does indeed have a face, he’s very good at burying it with his hair, but I couldn’t fault his vocals. They stuck to their 40 minutes and disappeared into the long wait for another decent band to take the stage…

…Which for me, happened to be GWAR!! What can I say about these guys that isn’t totally obvious. They are larger than life. Literally. They make their guitars look small. I was mesmorised by how they could even see what they were doing inside those costumes. The fake blood was endless and there was so much going on onstage. I’m not too familiar with their new stuff, but I actually wasn’t too focused on the music, more on the latex and whether or not the blood would reach me, standing back at a safe distance. Hehe now that is entertainment!

Dum-de-doo by now fatigue is setting in. No wait, that was Parkway Drive. I couldn’t for the life of me work out the appeal of these guys, or Dropkick Murphys who sounded like a celtic folky band you’d hear down at the Black Harp on a Friday night. Same confusion for NOFX. Oh well, they could keep going while I found a good spot to wait for Megadeth. I even ignored their lame attempts at cajoling the Megadeth fans.

And finally, here they were. Wowie, hello Dave Ellefson! Welcome back! Straight into Rust in Peace. All of it, flawless. Yes, the whole album, even Dawn Patrol, and the first time I’ve ever seen, Vic Rattlehead himself made an appearance, pointing out at us with a bony finger. Chris Broderick was on fire. I spent most of the time thinking “Marty who?” incredible. Mustaine’s vocals were hanging in there, a surprisingly good job considering how hard these songs are to play live. Yup, we got a few extra songs tacked on the end too, and it was all over within an hour.

I barely had time to grab a taxi and head back to the hotel, but who should I meet there but Chris Broderick himself, friendly and in good spirits and no doubt heading for the nearest gym.

Well, despite the overloading punk/emo/deathcore/celtic trippyness, I got to see some decent metal acts and that to me was all worth it.

I can has sleep naow?

Initially U.D.O. were going to release Rev Raptor on January 14, 2011, however because of the re-emergence of Steve Kaufmann‘s (guitarist) back problems, that got pushed out to March. Now it’s been delayed again, this time until May 20, 2011. Let’s hope Steve’s doing well and that we can get this moving. Dominator feels like it was released so long ago.

Still no details are available as to the cover art or tracklist.

Lots of interviews flying around at the moment. Here’s another good one, this time Metal-Rules.com interview Suicidal Tendencies. These days Mike Clark (rhythm guitar) and Dean Pleasants (lead guitar) seem to be the ones getting interviewed the most. This time Eric Moore (drums) made an appearance, even if he only spoke rarely. But it’d be nice to see Cyco Miko every now and then.

The interview is almost 10 minutes long and they talk about the recent ST/No Mercy release which was basically old stuff in the new style showing off the talents of the new members. They have some material ready for a new studio album, but Clark says the timing isn’t right. First they’re spending time touring around the world showing people that ST aren’t dead, and second they’re promoting this current compilation album. Once that’s done, they seem to imply that they’ll work on the new album and then I guess do a worldwide supporting tour for that.

Looking forward to it, and I’m hoping they get back to New Zealand. It’s been many a year since they last played here.

DJ Shredder of Metal Assault Radio has done a video interview with Forbidden, the tech-thrash band who recently released the album Omega Wave. They talk about things like creating an album when the band members are across the planet, the impact of the Net on the music, and 70,000 tons of metal.

Respect to DJ Shredder for his fine taste in music. Not only does he have a Suicidal Tendencies hat, but he’s sporting a Lich King t-shirt too.

Forgotten Canadian death-thrashers Infernal Majesty only really have one album of note, their 1987 LP ‘None Shall Defy’. This is the opening track of the album, with infectious vocal lines and dirty riffing. The album plays out in a satisfying and punishing way, with the murky, rather clean guitar tone being unique to this work.

The band itself was late to the thrash scene, so any impact this album could have made was completely ignored by an over-saturated market. They haven’t ever truly broken-up, but have been plagued by lineup issues and an apparent lack of interest. They recorded a concert recently wherein the performed ‘None Shall Defy’ in its entirety, but the preview-video features a lack-luster crowd, and as far as I know, they haven’t released anything since 2007; which saw the release of the ‘Demon God’ EP, and featured a rerecorded “SOS” guest-starring Corpsegrinder of Cannibal Corpse.

Other highlights of this album are the title track, “SOS” and “Into the Unknown”.

None Shall Defy is a forgotten classic, and is totally worth the bandwidth or money for it if you see it in a store somewhere.

Mark Tornillo, Accept‘s new singer and the singer on their latest album Blood of the Nations does a short video interview with Rock Scene. He talks about his influences and the rock scene when he was growing up. A nice bit of insight, but I wish the damn cameraman would hold the camera still. I hate this wanky new Directard wanna-be shit.

Darkness was one of the also-rans in the German thrash scene, and were content to worship their more-known contemporaries. As usual, this album isn’t particularly original, and the production sounds just like Terrible Certainty (Kreator), and that’s why it’s enjoyable. The guitars are the typical German-tremolo picking with a touch of Bay-Area power-chord riffage thrown in.  The soloing is again indicative of the geography, messy tremolo picked solos with healthy amounts of the whammy bar applied. The vocals sound like a more bass-heavy Mille Petrozza (Kreator), with a slightly more pronounced accent.

As is usual with the B-Teams of thrash, all the reasons to enjoy this album are the same things that can be used against it. It’s simple, aggressive, and doesn’t push the envelope. But does it really need to? This is a fun album for die-hards of the style.

Other highlights on the disc are “Critical Threshold”, the title track, and the closer “Phantasmagoria”

Razorwyre, a band from my hometown of Wellington, New Zealand, have released their debut EP Coming Out free online. Go to Razorwyreband.com for a download link.

They were originally called Gaywyre, which would make their EP’s title make more sense. It’s possible the name came from the fact that they sound a lot like Judas Priest. Maybe they did JP covers when they started out. I can’t say I went to listen to them before they changed their name, but I did see them a few months ago and if you close your eyes, you’d think you were listening to JP. But maybe that was partly to do with all the beer I had drunk.

Still, worth a download at twice the price.
