The Sword are releasing their third album, titled Warp Riders, on August 24. It’s being billed as “a psychedelic space opera that explores the temporal themes of death and rebirth”.

The cover alone makes me want to buy it, as it’s done in the style of classic pulp sci-fi novels.

In addition to this release, The Sword are also releasing a limited edition 12″ hexagonal (!) picture-disc single of (The Night the Sky Cried) Tears of Fire.

Fans that are eagerly awaiting to hear the new material will have their thirst quenched on July 6 when first single Tres Brujas will be let loose online. The track is also the first part of a video trilogy helmed by former THE SWORD collaborators Artificial Army, which will launch in August. The second and third chapters of the saga will be for Lawless Lands and Night City.

Warp Riders‘ track list is:

01. Acheron/Unearthing the Orb
02. Tres Brujas
03. Arrows in the Dark
04. The Chronomancer I: Hubris
05. Lawless Lands
06. Astraea’s Dream
07. The Warp Riders
08. Night City
09. The Chronomancer II: Nemesis
10. (The Night the Sky Cried) Tears of Fire

Finally a live concert from Amorphis. DVD only unless you get the deluxe edition that has audio CDs. Covering their entire catalogue although not surprisingly there are only minimal selections from their very early stuff and the less sucessful of their mid-era stuff.

Their three most recent studio albums with the current vocalist Tomi Joutsen are great stuff, especially Eclipse and Skyforger.  I had no idea how to tag these guys as they are a bit of everything – melodic, doom, folk, heavy, melodic, progressive, some growl vox, they defy easy classification (as did their countrymates Sentenced).

Check out www.amorphis.net for the DVD trailer.

Candlemass are celebrating 25 years of legendary doom by performing an extra long show at Debaser Medis in Stockholm on Dec 18. They will be performing Epicus Doomicus Metalicus in its entirety with the original singer, Johan Längqvist.

Robert Lowe will still be there performing old and new songs at this epic event.

Tickets are available at Debaser.

I really should save some money ready so that I can go to an event like this one day. Because having only a few months to save up for a trip to the other side of the planet is going to take me longer than 6 months to save and plan for. :(

A print magazine dedicated to doom metal — titled Codex Doomicus — appears to be in the works and scheduled for a summer release (winter for those of us in the southern hemisphere).

Based in Quebec, Canada, Codex Doomicus so far has a MySpace page, upon which a history of doom metal appears, a few songs from various doom bands, and a notice requesting material to be reviewed.

Could be interesting. I look forward to its release, and getting hold of a copy.
