Annihilator have put together a free compilation called Total Annihilation. Just submit your email address for future spam, and they will give you a download link. Very interestingly, the download link is through RapidShare, and doesn’t force you through the usual non-account delays. It’s just a direct download link, so Annihilator or Earache Records will have cut a special deal.

Go grab it now (use a spam harvesting throwaway email address if you prefer). The track list is:

  1. The Trend
  2. Ambush
  3. Battered
  4. Carnival Diablos
  5. Back To The Palace
  6. Nothing Left
  7. Ultra-Motion
  8. Ritual
  9. King Of The Kill
  10. Second To None
  11. Ultraparanoia
  12. Refresh The Demon
  13. Tricks And Traps
  14. Never Forget

The page says it’s in conjunction with Metal Hammer, so maybe this is going to appear as a CD on the cover of one of their mags. Either way, I love Annihilator, and I love free, so this is a perfect marriage.

Today is a sad day. Another giant has fallen. Blackie Lawless has announced that he has been “born again” as a Christian, which I think means he’s now one of those fundamentalist Evangelical psychos like the ones who host Jesus Camp. He refers to Alice Cooper having being born again earlier this year, so sounds like the same goes for him.

In 2002, Dave Mustaine found God, but I’m not sure which of the almost infinite sub-Christian denominations he is, but soon following him Dave Ellefson found God too. So now they’re best buddies, and I’m hoping this doesn’t turn Megadeth into a Christian band.

But maybe they can step aside like Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo of Slayer do. They are both hardened Catholics, Araya being the most vocal about it as far as I know. Apparently, the subject matter of their songs doesn’t affect Tom when he said “I have a really strong belief system and these are just words and they’ll never interfere with what I believe and how I feel.” So this shows me that Slayer is nothing more than a show-band. That they don’t believe anything they’re singing, and they’re just doing it to cash in. Certainly I can’t imagine Araya and Lombardo hanging out with Kerry King or Jeff Hanneman if their belief systems were too different. It’s my understanding that King is an atheist, but not sure about Hanneman.

Either way, Slayer just come across as a band who are writing material simply to fill a demographic.

Dee Snider has always said he had Christian beliefs, but didn’t let that sour his music, as did greats like Dio, and Ozzy Osbourne. It used to be common to see people like Dio and Tommy Iommi wearing big fuck-off crosses around their necks. But they never really talked about religion, so I see them as believers, but not fundamentalists. The fact that modern artists are making so much noise about it tells me that they are fundamentalists. Especially Dave Mustaine, who already has such low self-esteem and Metallica penis envy that he has really fallen for the whole God thing head-over-heels. This year, in almost every interview, Mustaine has talked about God. It’s sad and pathetic.

It’s my belief that those who find God have either been brainwashed as children — sorry, indoctrinated — or their life is so shit that they have to turn to an invisible friend for support. Nobody who has a happy fulfilled life “finds” God.

Diamond Plate is one of the newer thrash bands, based out of Chicago. Startlingly young, though you wouldn’t guess it by the music in of itself.

This is the title cut off their newest EP, featuring a great four-song excursion into thrash metal. Featuring great production, great riffing and some mindblowing leads. To get it out of the way, the largest complaint about this release is the vocals. They are a bit… odd.  A deep throaty yell, though unique, isn’t necessarily the greatest.

More importantly, the instruments. Everybody in this three-piece is immensely talented. The drummer doesn’t get very creative (as is customary for the style), but definitely keeps up, and using his bass drums tastefully. The bass has a great thick tone, and is clearly audible with the rest of the instruments. Then the guitars, after all the riffing, there are some incredibly thought out solos. It’s obvious that this guitarist worships the throne that is Alex Skolnick, with long, technical solo sections. The title track is the longest on the EP, at seven minutes, but doesn’t become stale, with enough riff changes and breaks to keep the listener attentive throughout.

The rest of the release is similarly strong, and Diamond Plate is a band to watch out for, and if they can release a full length this strong, it will be monumental to the modern thrash scene.

It’s very nice. Great song. Gus G‘s guitar work is awesome, as is Bob Katsionis‘ keyboard wizardry.

First attempt at not .self posting on reddit, here goes:

Ulysses Siren is another forgotten Bay-Area band, the only thing setting them apart from the hordes of also-rans, is the incredible quality of their output. Releasing two demos (later compiled into a full length called Above the Ashes), Ulysses Siren was an incredible thrashing machine, sounding like an Americanized Artillery, with a touch of Exodus in the vocals. The riffs are technical and unique, and the playing without question. The lyrics are the standard thrash fare, though well thought out.

Terrorist Attack opens the compilation, introducing the album and the peculiar guitar tones. Not very distorted, so it sounds like good ol’ speed metal, but overdosing on PCP. The vocals drop in, while the lyrics aren’t anything special, it’s a very passionate delivery, accentuated by the guitar’s flourishes. The relatively clean tone also serves to show off how precise the instruments are, demanding perfection out of the players. The song goes through a few riff changes, a short break, then into an extended solo and bridge section. The vocals come back and repeat a chorus, ending the song strongly, then dropping into “The Reich”.

I could go on for a while in this fashion, but would end up gushing over ever single song. If you consider yourself a fan of thrash metal, become familiar with this bands material. You’ll thank me.

My Dying Bride, the laughably self-proclaimed leading light of Doom metal, are releasing a 20th anniversary double and triple CD reworking of their extensive catalogue. This will feature new vocals and passages from Aaron Stainthorpe. The triple CD version will include a 72 page hardback book. From Peaceville:

2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the UK doom titans My Dying Bride, and to commemorate two decades of doom and gloom, the band embarked upon a project to re-work familiar melodies and themes from My Dying Bride’s extensive catalogue into long, flowing symphonic compositions, including new vocals and passages from Aaron Stainthorpe. These arrangements have been brought to life in co-operation with keyboard maestro Johnny Maudling (of Bal Sagoth fame) and will be released as ‘Evinta’, as both a 2 disc and special 3 disc set, each disc its own sprawling classical work spanning a large period of My Dying Bride’s album material. The 3 disc set will also be accompanied by a specially limited 72 page hardback book featuring rare images and photographs from the band’s personal archive from over the years.

The set is scheduled for an October 25th release on Peaceville Records.

Here are a bunch of covers of Steppenwolf‘s ultra-classic Born To Be Wild. These are a lot more metal.

Here’s Twisted Sister doing it live in Wacken. As a huge Twisted Sister fan I’m saddened that this isn’t my favourite version. But I’m also sad that this didn’t appear as a studio recording anywhere.

This might annoy some people, but I feel I have to add it for completeness. Ozzy Osbourne doing it on The Muppets. The orgasmic commentary from Miss Piggy is almost too much for me to handle. Even as funny as her comment of “the frog can wait” is… well, it kind of ruins it, but there is a great rendition of Born To Be Wild under there. (more…)

There are a shit-tonne of great power metal bands out there, and some of them are quite obscure (at least on this side of the planet). A great many of them come from all over Europe, and are small enough that they don’t tour out of Europe as often as some would like. And getting power metal bands to tour regularly on the bottom of the planet is a rare thing indeed.

So, this feature will include videos from a bunch of power metal bands that you either haven’t heard of, or haven’t heard much of. I won’t include the big names like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Hammerfall, Helloween, Kamelot, Manowar — just the lesser known stuff.

Tell us what you think, and what you think of the bands.

Gaia Epicus

The first up today is Gaia Epicus, who hail from across Norway. Formed in 2001, they have released 2 demos and 4 full-length albums, with a 5th due this year. Their albums are:

  1. Satrap (2003)
  2. Symphony of Glory (2005)
  3. Victory (2007) – Epicus Records
  4. Damnation (2008) – Epicus Records
  5. Dark Secrets (due 2010)

Gaia Epicus – Cyborgs From Hell [Damnation]

Gaia Epicus – Keepers of Time [Satrap]

Those tracks and more are available from their website. Their links and more info on them: (more…)
