Metal Underground have done a short article on Witchfinder General’s place in history as pioneers of Doom metal. Probably nothing new for serious fans, but has a few video links. They’re always worth a listen.

Despite my login name here, I’m not really into these guys. I did own their albumx Death Penalty and, err, forget the name of the other one, for a while. Ended up hocking them off, not even the topless women on the front tempted me to keep them.
I’ve found that a lot of the bands hailed as important early doom stuff haven’t really floated my boat. Then again how can you beat the song Black Sabbath – anything before that pales in comparison, and it set the scene for everything after. Electric Funeral is probably the next classic doom metal track after that.
There’s no doubt that songs like those led to Candlemass which is what I’ve always considered as the classic modern melodic doom metal sound. ‘Modern’ as in mid 80s onward which is when metal had really taken hold and started expanding hugely around the world and into new subgenres.
For what it’s worth my login name is taken from the Cathedral song, which of course is based on the old movie/character.
