These are five video clips that I believe have stood (or will stand) the test of time. They are most certainly not the best the genre has to offer (well except Maiden‘s Final Frontier), but they are certainly among my favourites. They’re also just a drop in the ocean, so please post what you think of them, and send links to your favourites.

Iron Maiden – The Final Frontier

This is a brand new addition to the list, but it goes to the top for reasons that should be clearly obvious to all viewers.

Dream Evil with their new video for Bang Your Head. This video was directed by Patric Ullaeus, who has worked with Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Kamelot, and Lacuna Coil, as well as other videos for Dream Evil like The Book of Heavy Metal and their Gold Medal in Metal DVD.

But this video clip is utterly ridiculous and ruins a perfectly good song. The fake crowd cheering is far too over the top and there is too much of it. Had it been a bit more subtle, it may have passed as believable.

Good song, shit video. This makes me paranoid about buying their DVD because it’s probably all as stupidly over-engineered as this. So good job guys, this video has made you lose at least one sale.

Last night was one of the nights that the Big 4 were playing in our local cinemas, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see Anthrax play. The show was filmed in late June at Sofia, Bulgaria and finally made its way to the bottom of the planet.

It went without a hitch here in Wellington, but Hamilton had some trouble. Apparently the trouble was the late arrival of the screen masters and not being able to transfer it to their hard drives. So not sure, but maybe they don’t use tape spool projectors any more. The cinema managed to contact all but 30 people, who turned up after having got drunk first and were mad, possibly because, well other than the fact that they’re redneck hicks, that they had to go back home to their families. One man threatened theatre staff with his walking cane, so I hate to think what would have happened if he threw his teeth down. Police escorted the old drunken git off the premises. (more…)

Fear Factory have released what they’re saying is an “Internet only” video clip for Powershifter after the original was allegedly leaked. This features them playing live, but the sound is from the studio recording. Not too shabby. This is one of the better songs form their latest album Mechanize.

This album was released mid-ish 2009 I think.  I downloaded it legitmately for free using the bandit.fm promotion with Pepsi & Bluebird earlier this year.

I wasn’t expecting anything amazing as the only other studio albums they’ve released in the last 15 years, Sea Of Light and Sonic Origami, were respectable efforts without a whole lot of high points (one notable exception being on the latter, the opening track Between Two Worlds).   There is a compilation called Golden Palace which brings together generally the best tracks on those two albums, plus a track that was originally a Jap bonus I think.  Anyway I digress…

Wake The Sleeper is very impressive for a band that has been around 40 years.  Probably a bit heavier than they’ve been before, which to compete in the hard rock scene thesedays is probably what you need to do, as heavy gets redefined pretty much every decade or so.  Alice Cooper has been very astute at cranking up the heavy factor over the years – most notably Brutal Planet which remains my favourite of his.

Oops I digress again, so back to Heep.  Band membership has changed a fair bit but Mick Box has been there from the start, bassist Trevor Bolder has a very respectable pedigree not to mention being in Heep for the vast majority of the years since 1976, and Bernie Shaw has been the longest serving vocalist.  As an aside Bernie performed vocals on a cover of Iron Maiden‘s Fear Of The Dark (title track) which is on one of the plethora of Maiden tributes out there.

In short, check out Wake The Sleeper if you are into that sort of keyboard-laced hard rock and clean vocals!  It’s a very good and diverse album that sounds fresh despite the bands roots being decades ago.

Hooded Menace, a Finnish death-doom band have released a new song I, Devil Master on their MySpace page. These guys may not appeal to everyone, as their vocals are deep and gutteral, not the terrible cookie monster growling that most “normal” death metal bands do, but still very deep. Give them a listen, the deep, dark, slow tempo of the music should at least in some way appeal to doom lovers.

Today’s Wednesday WTF?!?! is going to focus on bands that are a bit rude. Rude band names, rude song names. Bands like Cannibal Corpse have made a name for themselves by being as offensive as possible (including getting themselves and their recordings banned in Australia and Germany until recently), but today I’m going to focus on the more obscure.

All of the bands are grindcore, or some offshoot of it, but that wasn’t my aim. It’s just the way the die rolled. I guess it’s pertinent that the idea behind that genre is to be as abrasive and nasty as possible, not just in the sound, but in the themes as well. So naturally, the nastiest bands seem to gravitate toward grindcore. (more…)

Metallica have added one more show in Christchurch, NZ. According to them:

We are so psyched to add a second show in Christchurch, New Zealand at CBS Canterbury Arena on September 21…thanks again for demanding that we visit you there!!

Now to the real reason we’re here taking up space on this site…we also want to announce that all of our play dates have now filled up with the addition of this show…that’s right boys and girls, this will be the last date added to the World Magnetic Tour! So if you’re waiting for us to come to the Polar Ice Caps, your undiscovered planet or even your basement, sorry, this is as good at it gets.

It has been a very long, and most amazing run. The number of shows played depends on when you start counting. We are gonna go with what the boys in the band say, ‘cuz they have been out on the road more or less continuously since May of 2008 and that brings us up to a total of 212 shows in 153 cities. Each and every one of them has been memorable and special and we thank you for that. This is where we could spew a bunch of crazy numbers at you…you know the 2.3 million tickets sold, 300 million miles traveled, 3,000 pounds of bacon consumed “shtick,” but you don’t care about that stuff and frankly neither do we. What we DO care about is letting you know the immense gratitude we feel for all of your love and support over these past two and half years. When we embarked on this “magnetic” journey, none of us ever, in our wildest dreams, imagined how truly incredible it would be and it’s all because of hanging out with YOU!

It’s obviously not over just yet, so let’s not get too sappy here…we’re off to Australia, New Zealand and Japan in the Fall for what promises to be some of the loudest, craziest, most rocking shows!

Holy shitmonkeys. Iron Maiden have released the video for The Final Frontier. This is a sci-fi mini-epic which packs more action in 5 minutes than an entire season of Star Trek or Babylon 5.

http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=105822368

If this is shaping up to be a concept album that tells a story, and as long as videos like this are released for all the songs, I will embrace it with open arms.

The full track listing of The Final Frontier, with a total running time of 76:35, is:

  1. Satellite 15….The Final Frontier (Smith/Harris) (8:40)
  2. El Dorado (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (6:49)
  3. Mother Of Mercy (Smith/Harris) (5:20)
  4. Coming Home (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (5:52)
  5. The Alchemist (Gers/Harris/Dickinson) (4:29)
  6. Isle Of Avalon (Smith/Harris) (9:06)
  7. Starblind (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (7:48)
  8. The Talisman (Gers/Harris) (9:03)
  9. The Man Who Would Be King (Murray/Harris) (8:28)
  10. When The Wild Wind Blows (Harris) (10:59)

Given that the title track is listed as nearly 9 minutes, and that this video is only 5, either there’s more to come, or they blew their budget already. But either way I don’t feel shortchanged. Well, not yet anyway because I haven’t paid anything. I expect I will on August 17 when it comes out. (more…)

According to Nuclear Blast, Germany’s Metal Hammer is including an exclusive Blind Guardian CD for headbangers worldwide with the issue being released on July 14. Except that I think the rest of the world gets UK’s Metal Hammer. So if you want it, you have to order it direct.

The CD contains 8 unreleased live tracks from Wacken Open Air 2007, plus one song from their upcoming album At the Edge of Time. That track is Sacred Worlds, which is listed as an edit, possibly because on the CD it’s going to be over 9 minutes.

The track listing is:

  1. Sacred Worlds (Metal Hammer edit)
  2. War Of Wrath
  3. Into The Storm
  4. Born In A Mourning Hall
  5. Nightfall
  6. Fly
  7. Valhalla
  8. The Bard’s Song
  9. Mirror Mirror

At the Edge of Time will be released on July 30.
