Here is a video of highlights of Manowar playing this year’s summer festivals. At three shows (Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey), they played to over 75,000 people.

It’s my mission in life to go see them play just once. Even though their last two albums have been 60% crap, all their others are utterly brilliant. Dammit; I’m going to go watch the Earthshaker Festival DVD now.

In an interview by Italy’s SpazioRock, Tom Angelripper of Sodom goes on a journey back through time to discover the origins of thrash metal.

Tom does mention that they are entering the studio in July, and aim to release their next album in October or November.

Later in the piece, he talks about the main three pioneers of the European thrash scene, being Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction. Tom says, “My dream is to do a tour with the three bands one day. The problem is that we have different record companies  and also we have to keep alive the business. You know, the situation in Europe and in Germany is really bad. So, for now we’re looking forward for the next Sodom album and then we will see how it will go touring with other bands.

So while there’s nothing on the cards now, it’d be awesome to see the three together. Even if it’s a one-off show that they release a DVD for, that’d be something a lot of fans would get into. We all know how unlikely the Big 4 were a few years ago. All it takes is someone driven enough to pull it together. Takers anyone?

The Sword are releasing their third album, titled Warp Riders, on August 24. It’s being billed as “a psychedelic space opera that explores the temporal themes of death and rebirth”.

The cover alone makes me want to buy it, as it’s done in the style of classic pulp sci-fi novels.

In addition to this release, The Sword are also releasing a limited edition 12″ hexagonal (!) picture-disc single of (The Night the Sky Cried) Tears of Fire.

Fans that are eagerly awaiting to hear the new material will have their thirst quenched on July 6 when first single Tres Brujas will be let loose online. The track is also the first part of a video trilogy helmed by former THE SWORD collaborators Artificial Army, which will launch in August. The second and third chapters of the saga will be for Lawless Lands and Night City.

Warp Riders‘ track list is:

01. Acheron/Unearthing the Orb
02. Tres Brujas
03. Arrows in the Dark
04. The Chronomancer I: Hubris
05. Lawless Lands
06. Astraea’s Dream
07. The Warp Riders
08. Night City
09. The Chronomancer II: Nemesis
10. (The Night the Sky Cried) Tears of Fire

I had no idea about this until after it was released.  A new full length concert release from Clutch, ostensibly their classic self titled album performed in its entirety, but that’s hardly a whole concert so it’s no surprise that there is a selection of tracks from their latest studio effort ‘Strange Cousins From The West‘ and a few others from the back catalogue. Not to mention a bunch of extra stuff including band history & interviews.

It wasn’t that long ago that Clutch released separate DVD and CD versions of the full length ‘Full Fathom Five‘ concert, and not long before that the limited release live double CD ‘Heard It All Before‘ which I regard as clearly superior to Full Fathom Five, perhaps mainly due to the track listing better suiting the more recent Clutch fan.

Clutch’s web site is www.pro-rock.com which currently has a promo on the first page for the new release… look for the pro-rock.com link at the bottom of the page to get into the rest of the site.

My personal Clutch favourites are the self titled (earlier era), From Beale St To Oblivion (latter era), the Live At The Googolplex live album and the aforementioned Heard It All Before double CD if you can lay your hands on that.  The rest of their stuff is somewhat hit and miss for me, but others love it and they are a band worth checking out. I can tell you first hand that their small-n-sweaty gig at the Kings Arms (Auckland) February 2010 was more enjoyable than the AC/DC and Faith No More gigs around the same time.

Other Clutch news is that apparently they are coming up with half a dozen acoustic tracks including one new track for an EP release around the end of this year.

Finally a live concert from Amorphis. DVD only unless you get the deluxe edition that has audio CDs. Covering their entire catalogue although not surprisingly there are only minimal selections from their very early stuff and the less sucessful of their mid-era stuff.

Their three most recent studio albums with the current vocalist Tomi Joutsen are great stuff, especially Eclipse and Skyforger.  I had no idea how to tag these guys as they are a bit of everything – melodic, doom, folk, heavy, melodic, progressive, some growl vox, they defy easy classification (as did their countrymates Sentenced).

Check out www.amorphis.net for the DVD trailer.

According to Blabbermouth, Crimson Glory are claiming that the forthcoming release of the boxset In Dark Places, is not being done with their permission or sanction. Apparently the rights were sold illegally by Roadrunner (who ironically own Blabbermouth) to a Polish company called Metal Mind Records in 2007.

I’m not sure the source of this statement, as it’s not on the band’s MySpace or Facebook pages (unless I need an account to see the latter), but it is as follows:

CRIMSON GLORY does not recognize nor sanction the new CD releases or box sets made by Metal Mind Records (Poland). They are producing our CDs illegally and thus have ZERO rights to market, promote, advertise, release, distribute or sell any of our material; therefore they have ZERO rights to make any profit from our image, likeness or music.

This has been an ongoing battle between >CRIMSON GLORYand Metal Mind ever since Roadrunner Records . . . illegally [sold] the rights (which they did not possess) to the Polish record company in 2007. It is a glaring example of what a shambles the music industry has become, and it is crucial to the band that their fans recognize the reality of the situation.

Commented CRIMSON GLORY lead guitarist and founding member Jon Drenning: “We have become disenfranchised from our own music, with everybody making a profit from our efforts but us! As a group of hard-working dedicated musicians who have now given 25 years of our lives and hearts to this band and this music, it is beyond heart-breaking to watch these companies profit from [these] actions. This music is our passion; creating each record has been a labor of love, and what’s happening to us and our music right now is frustrating and insulting.”

He added, “We wish to make it perfectly clear to our friends and fans out there, all over the world, that these and any other albums or releases are not being produced or distributed with our permission, and that the money they wish to spend on our records is money that we as a band have earned but will never see until this matter is properly resolved.

In the meantime, CRIMSON GLORY is presently negotiating with other labels regarding the remastering, re-releasing and future distribution of all of our material, and anything to do with the band regarding album releases, tour dates, promotional material, etc., will be shared via official press releases and the CRIMSON GLORY MySpace and Facebook pages ONLY.

Angels of Babylon, the new project that includes Dave Ellefson (bassist of Megadeth), and Rhino (ex-drummer of Manowar), will be releasing their debut album, Kingdom of Evil, on July 27.

Now I’m not normally one to question someone’s religious beliefs — OK, that’s complete bullshit — but Ellefson seems to have taken a nose dive into Christianity lately. Mustaine has as well, but thankfully the religious elements have been kept out of Megadeth thus far. Ellefson also joined Hail! — with Ripper Owens (Judas Priest, Iced Earth), and had names like Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Jimmy DeGrasso (Suicidal Tendencies, Lita Ford, Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T, and a fuckload of others), and Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) thrown about as touring musicians — and they appear to have a religious bent.

While I’m a fan of Rhino, I’m not sure I’ll bother with this album. The religious implications are enough to sour it, but it’s not blatant Christian music, so that’s not so bad. It is, however, fucking boring, slow crap. They’ve got a few tracks online at the Angels of Babylon MySpace page, so take a listen. You can pre-order from Amazon, and there’s a link on their blog, but I’ll just increase the search engine ranking of that page if I link directly to it. I’m sure after listening to the tracks, you won’t get as far as clicking any order buttons.

Atrocity‘s new album, titled After The Storm, will be coming out during September, and will guest star Yasmin Krull singing. Yasmin is the sister of Atrocity’s vocalist Alexander Krull. Yasmin has sung for them before on the EP Calling The Rain, which coincidentally will be seeing a re-release, no doubt to maximise sales.

The one thing I do like about Atrocity is that they break rules, and stretch out beyond any defined genre.

ATROCITY feat. Yasmin – After the Storm tracklist:

1. A New Arrival
2. Call of Yesteryear
3. After the Storm
4. Silvan Spirit
5. Black Mountain
6. As the Sun Kissed The Sky
7. Transilvania
8. The Flight of Abbas Ibn Firnas
9. Goddess of Fortune and Sorrow
10. The Otherworld
11. Eternal Nightside

Release Dates:

01 Sep 2010 Spain
04 Sep 2010 Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, Sweden
06 Sep 2010 Europe, Rest of world
14 Sep 2010 USA, Canada

In addition to the standard edition, After The Storm will be available “exclusively” (although they don’t tell us exactly where or who it’s exclusive to) in a couple of digipak versions. One is a “noble matt printed Digipak” and the other is a limited deluxe edition which sounds like it’s going to have a second digipak which will be the remastered Calling The Rain EP + a bonus track.

The US power metallers, Avian, are releasing a 3 track EP titled The Path some time in “Fall” which means an arbitrary date between September and the end of November. I really wish Americans wouldn’t refer to release dates by seasons. They don’t seem to be aware that a) they’re the only ones who call Autumn “Fall”, and b) seasons are different depending on which hemisphere you’re in.

Anyway, the tracks for the EP are:

1: The Path
2. When The Night’s Undone, S.S. (Instrumental)
3. The Fear (Live Acoustic)

Running time is about 20 minutes. The third track won’t be featured on their forthcoming full length album, which is scheduled to be released early 2011.

In addition, their bassist and backing vocalist, Brian Hollenbeck, has taken the reigns as the band’s new singer.

This year at Hellfest 2010 in France, Twisted Sister played a tribute to Ronnie James Dio. The song is Rainbow‘s ‘Long Live Rock & Roll’.
