MAYHEM are getting free advertising from Family First in NZ

Posted by tekhammer

Family First, a group of do-gooders who think that they are helping society by sheltering children instead of preparing them for the real world, have made some statements telling people to avoid the Mayhem show in NZ. Yeah, that'll work. In fact, I expect this announcement will actually only lead to increased ticket sales, because as it stands, this gig was relatively unannounced outside the usual circles. So now that more people know Mayhem are coming, the King's Arms Tavern stand to pack the place out.

One of my favourite quotes from the promoter, when he was asked if people going to the gig should fear for their safety was "Absolutely. If there is one show this year where one can reasonably expect one’s safety to be compromised by the performing act, this is the one. With the history this band have, it would be flat out ludicrous for one to attend this show with an expectation of being safe, unmolested and unsubjected to offence."

Fucking hilarious. Now Mayhem aren't my thing because they're more experimental psychedelic sounding insano-music (and I don't consider them Black Metal, just like I don't consider Venom BM either -- I think they inspired BM, but that's as far as it goes).

So groups like Family First are too stupid to realise that kicking up a stink about it will actually result in the exact opposite result they want. They are actually helping advertise the Mayhem show. Free of charge. Retaaaaaarded. But I don't expect anything less from religious nutters. I'm expecting the Salvation Army to make an appearance, spitting bile through their megaphones on the night, and I expect them to be louder and more offensive than Mayhem.

Therion – new album Sitra Ahra; part ways with Snowy Shaw

The merry-go-round of Therion members continues with Snowy Shaw now departed.  I like the candid approach in the press release below (copied from their myspace site) where there is no animosity but they say that they don't agree with the decision. Mentioned in a later release not copied here is that their new bassist won't be touring with them for this album either but remains a band member. Lori Lewis (what a voice and what a fox) and Katarina Lilja (a bit of a gothic dolly) are still touring with them, so life is still good.

Also contains information about their Sitra Ahra album coming out mid Sept, or late Oct in the USA.  According to their own words, it's a "...blend of symphonic metal, classical, and timeless bombastic rock structures".  So in other words it's a Therion album, heh heh. I suspect the symphonic stuff will be turned up a notch on this one after working with a real orchestra on The Miskolc Experience.

Sweden’s genre-defying THERION have issued the following statement:

“We are sad to confirm that Snowy Shaw has suddenly decided to not do any of the upcoming shows with THERION. This decision took us by surprise, because, up to now, we have had a great collaboration. The reason is simply that he has been working on an album with another big band (as a bass player - that came as a surprise too!), who have now offered him a deal he felt he could not refuse. We don't think this is a good decision, but accept the situation and wish him good luck.

“We realize many will miss Snowy, who did a great job during the more theatrical direction THERION took during the Gothic Kabbalah era (as well as on the coming album, Sitra Ahra). Like all the other close guest collaborators in the history of the band (Mats Levén, Andy "the bald guy" Engberg, Karin Fjellander, Sara Jezebel Deva, Martina Hornbacher, Dan Swanö...), he contributed with something unique and put his mark on the ongoing THERION development. And just like the choice of Mats Levén was questioned in the beginning, (for being too rock ‘n’ roll for THERION) and later became a beloved part of the band’s identity at the time,  Snowy also made the journey from being regarded as a somewhat odd choice to becoming a popular character in the THERION show.

“This vacancy, however, gives us an opportunity to yet again take a different direction. We are right now in the process of creating the new production that will be used for the Sitra Ahra World Tour, and we have some thrilling options to choose from. As always, THERION will deliver something unique and challenging that will turn the water of the skeptics into the wine of a classic set-up. Stay tuned!”

THERION recently revealed the artwork to their new album, Sitra Ahra, on their homepage.  Mixed by Lennart Östlund (Led Zeppelin, ABBA) at the legendary Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, the new album will be released later this year.

The track listing for Sitra Ahra is as follows:

01. Sitra Ahra
02. Kings Of Edom
03. Unguentum Sabbati
04. Land Of Canaan
05. Hellequin
06. 2012
07. Cu Chulain
08. Kali Yoga III
09. The Shells Are Open
10. Din
11. After The Inquisition: Children

In May 2009, Johnsson announced that vocalist Thomas Vikström (ex-CANDLEMASS) had official permanent member status.  Johnsson recently recruited Christian Vidal (ex-The Road Vultures, ex-Cuero) from Argentina as the band's new guitarist, who his live debut with THERION on June 4, 2010 in Mexico City.  Comprising THERION's new rhythm section are Johan Koleberg (Animal, Zan Clan, Lion’s Share) on drums and Nalle "Grizzly" Påhlsson (Treat, Zan Clan, Vindictiv) on bass.

Lord’s cover of On A Night Like This

It's not new news that Aussie melodic metallers Lord previously released a cover of Kylie Minogue's song On A Night Like This.  They turned it from a fairly tepid pop song (albeit with a reasonable chorus) into a respectable melodic hard rock version.

But last night on YouTube I stumbled across a hilarious video for it which parodies the original version (along with a visual parody on her Can't Get You Out Of My Head video). People might recall there was some grumbling at the time because the original video was too suggestive or something like this, which has made great fodder for this pisstake version.

Also check out Lord's metal-ised version of the Dr Who Theme which will probably appear on the right hand sidebar on the YouTube page.

Warrel Dane – Praises To The War Machine

I just got this recently for $12 in the Real Groovy Auckland metal sale bin.

Warrel Dane is of course the vocalist/frontman of the excellent Nevermore, and formerly Sanctuary.

His solo album Praises To The War Machine came out in 2008. I heard a couple of the tracks at the time which were nothing amazing, particularly when one considers the staggeringly good releases that Nevermore previously produced (e.g. Dreaming Neon Black, Dead Heart In A Dead World, and This Godless Endeavour). I also read a couple of reviews that generally suggested that it was a typical solo album in that it didn't really produce anything of great note.

Now that I have it I'm pleased to say it's a very good and very enjoyable album, and while it can't touch Nevermore's best stuff, it's worth owning even at full price I'd say. The cover version of Lucretia My Reflection (originally by Sisters Of Mercy of course) didn't grab me on first listen I have to say, but after three listens now I'm liking that a lot too.

The album features playing and some songwriting by Peter Witchers (Soilwork), and Matt Wicklund (ex-Himsa), and a couple of guest guitar solos.

Rock on!

“No Sleep Til” festival – Auckland and Australia

The word is spreading fast.

See http://www.nosleeptil.com.au/

Fri 10th December, ASB Showgrounds (the area the Logan Campbell centre is in, Greenlane Akld)

Megadeth headline, as part of their effort to play the whole of Rust In Piece to just about everybody in the world :-P

The band of most interest to me, and most (pleasant!) surprise to see on the bill is Norway's Katatonia.

Perhaps equally surprising to see in NZ is Gwar, that should be a laugh.

Obviously if this festival wasn't playing across Aussie then we wouldn't be getting these bands here, so kudos to the organisers!

Other bands include - NOFX (their last album Coaster was very good), 3 Inches of Blood, Dropkick Murphys, Parkway Drive, plus Antagonist AD lead a small kiwi contingent for the Auckland show.

I've booked a cheap flight already. My girlfriend and I were already taking a long weekend (Sat-Mon) in Akld that weekend anyway so I'll just go up early afternoon on the Friday instead.

Metal Underground: Sunday Old School – WITCHFINDER GENERAL

Posted by tekhammer

Metal Underground have done a short article on Witchfinder General's place in history as pioneers of Doom metal. Probably nothing new for serious fans, but has a few video links. They're always worth a listen.

Mo Metal Monday — DEMONTAGE

Posted by tekhammer

Mo Metal Monday is about introducing bands you may not have heard of before. The aim is to broad my (and your) horizons and find some quality stuff.

Demontage is a Canadian 3-piece band someone on Shreddit posted a link to. They call themselves black metal / psychedelic. And it's probably safe to call them Blackened Heavy Metal. Their style actually reminds me a lot of Venom. Pounding doomy riffs and gruff vocals. Not so gruff as to enter the ridiculous cookie monster/wookie growling of death metal or the dying harpy screeching sound of second generation black metal, but, well, just think of Venom.

They've released two albums, Sacrilege 'n Miscreancy (2006), and The Principal Extinction (2010). Both can be ordered from Shadow Kingdoms.

The Demontage MySpace page has a few sample songs which are well worth checking out.

CANDLEMASS ltd gold vinyl NIGHTFALL re-release available for pre-order

Posted by tekhammer

If I had a record player I'd buy this.

Candlemass are releasing their second album, Nightfall, on heavy-weight (180 gram) gold coloured vinyl. I'm actually still considering it; but if it was a picture disc for my wall I'd have no hesitation whatsoever.

It's limited to 2000 copies and is available for pre-order for its September 20 release.

The track list is:

Side 1

  1. Gothic Stone
  2. The Well Of Souls
  3. Codex Gigas
  4. At The Gallows End
  5. Samarithan

Side 2

  1. Marche Funebre
  2. Dark Are The Veils Of Death
  3. Mourner's Lament
  4. Bewitched
  5. Black Candles

So no bonus tracks or anything, but will include a gatefold cover and new liner notes from Leif Edling.

EXODUS release video for DOWNFALL

Posted by tekhammer

This came out a couple of weeks ago, and I've seen it before, but forgot to post it here. So if you haven't see it already, here's Downfall from Exodus' recent album Exhibit B: The Human Condition.

I'm still psyched about going to see them on 1st October, but I should get my A into G because I haven't booked the motel yet.
